Who We Are

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is the largest electrical union in the world. The IBEW represents workers’ rights in all areas of the electrical and telecommunications industries.
The National Electrical Contractors Association, NECA, represents union electrical contractors. These contractors guarantee their installations, perform quality work on time and on budget, and take a special interest in their employees.
To provide the highly skilled workforce necessary to meet customer needs and ensure job satisfaction for electrical workers, the IBEW and NECA teamed up to sponsor the most rigorous and respected apprenticeship training program.
Established in 1941, the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) has developed uniform standards that are used nationwide to train thousands of qualified men and women for demanding and rewarding careers in the electrical and telecommunications industries. The NJATC is now called the National Electrical Training Alliance.
History of Our IBEW 906 JATC
IBEW Local 906 consists of every county in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and portions of Florence and Marinette counties of Wisconsin. Local 906 was created from combining three separate Locals in January of 2016 to create one stronger Local. Those Locals were formerly 1070 of Marquette area, 979 of the Escanaba area, and 219 of the Iron Mountain area. With the combining of the locals came a centrally located JATC training center for our apprentices at our current location of 304 Ave. A, Gwinn, MI. which is on the previous K.I. Sawyer AFB. We have the ability to provide all classes, lab shops, and administrative offices and support in one location.
Our JATC follows the National Electrical Training Alliance curriculum and is a five-year education and training program. At the end of five years, our apprentices graduate from our program with over 900 hours of classroom instruction and 8,000 field hours.
School is once every other week starting in September going through to July. Tuition and books are provided. All classes are held at the JATC Training Center.
